The
Château de Bonnac was built for the local Seigneur at the
very beginning of the 16th Century from typical materials of the
region; clay bricks, riverstones and oak timbers. The whole château
has been recently renovated and restored to it's original splendour,
the ground floor being particularly charming. The front of the
building, facing the courtyard remains severe-looking, as it was
in the middle ages, however the back of the house, looking south
over the park, looks every bit the 18th Century country house
with it's long façade and numerous, generous windows. The château
first came into the hands of the family who still own it in
1816.
Situated
in the foothills of the Pyrenean mountains of the Ariege, a
region rich in exceptional historical, religious and prehistoric
sites and monuments and places of breathtaking natural beauty,
65 kilometres from TOULOUSE ( by motorway ) and 5 kilometres
from PAMIERS, the château enjoys an incredibly calm and
peaceful setting, thanks to it's own 11 hectare park which is
completely surrounded by the shallow river Ariege.
Treat
yourself to a week or two away from it all , lose yourself in
the enormous walled park, play tennis, wallow in the clear water
of the river, walk up into the forested hillsides, or simply
laze out in the sun.
In the
local area you may see
deer, red squirrels, foxes, badgers and numerous birds of
prey and songbirds. Further into the mountains the wildlife
and wild flowers are amazing.
